What About Success ?

3 John 3:2   I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers.

Success is many thing's to different folk's , but for most , it speaks of financial freedom.
I have always been intrigued by the myriad of books written on prosperity or the "blessing"
such as it is , in a Christian perspective. We are usually given steps. 5 steps to success , 4 steps to a better life and so on. They usually end up steps to nowhere. I have read more books than I can count. I love to read. They have value and one can learn much , But at the end of the day , most of us are still found lacking .
One guy told me the more he worked , the luckier he got.  That's one way to look at it I guess. We generally put our hopes in what the speaker is saying , and it keeps us coming back , but they are usually the ones getting wealthy from it. We finally conclude we are in this alone, and it must be worked out alone.

Seeking wisdom can wear you out, unless you use wisdom while seeking it . Bottom line : We must each seek Gods will
for our individual lives . His plan is uniquely different for each of us. What worked for Johnny, probably will not work for us. All folks cannot be rich and all cannot be poor , but what we all can be , is at peace and contentment with who we are , and where we are going. It revolves around one person, Jesus Christ ! As the old saying goes , wise men still seek him ! He has planned your life right down to the dollar . Go forth and prosper in your relationship with him, and everything else will fall in place.

God bless you on your journey !

Hi Bobby,

My take on it is this - if we pursue God instead of riches as the pagans do, he will supply our needs , our daily bread. We won't need a million dollars in the bank to feel secure because he becomes our security, our provider.

Matthew 6 32-33  For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

That doesn't mean he's going to make you a millionaire, but you will learn to be content with very little if you become spiritual instead of worldly, and he will meet your needs.

1 Timothy 6:7-9  For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either.  If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content .  But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction.

That's a far cry from what is being taught by prosperity preachers on TV. Most are multi-millionaires with mansions, private jets, and so on. Copeland is a self professed billionaire with his own private airport. Meanwhile children starve to death while people keep sending them even more money. Why? Because the prosperity preachers promise that they will get rich too by sowing to them. The verse you quoted is one they like to twist. This quote below explains:

To substantiate their teachings, proponents of the prosperity gospel distort the meaning of certain Bible passages. One such passage, frequently quoted is 3 John 2. John began his letter with a friendly greeting, expressing his desire that Gaius "may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers".

Kenneth Copeland explains this verse on page 51 of his book,  The Laws of Prosperity , says, "You must realize that it is God's will for you to prosper. This is available to you, and frankly, it would be stupid of you not to partake of it".

This verse, however, according to James Bjornstad in his article, "What's Behind the Prosperity Gospel?", published by Moody Monthly in the 1986 issue, "is nothing more than John's personal wish for Gaius. We should not take it as an universal promise or guarantee of health and wealth".

The Greek word translated "prosper" in the KJV means "to go well with someone". This wish for "things to go well" and for "good health" was the standard form of greeting in personal letter of antiquity, just as a friend today might say, "I hope this letter finds you all well".  Full Article

What about keeping our treasures in heaven? If we are chasing treasures on earth something is wrong with our theology. I'm not saying we need to go live on a mountaintop as an ascetic, but we should be focused on God not money, and content if he meets our basic needs. This is a little piece out of larger article I wrote.

In any case, I must add my voice to the growing chorus of critics  on both sides , bewailing the loathsome and repulsive  prosperity Gospel .  It is so vile and heretical as to be beneath the dignity of a critical response. 1 Timothy 6:6-10 condemns it, Matthew 6:19-34 as well, plus many other texts. Contrary to MacArthur's assertions, many leaders and groups within the continuist camp  oppose it .

Why make millionaires out of greedy charlatans while innocent children starve to death? If you have the means, sow into  pure  religion rather than feed wolves. Here are some  needy orphans  who really do need your help -  Change for Children

I love an old country Gospel song that speaks to this very issue: Mountains of Gold  song 5 in this player .
