Here is my arrangement of this Christmas favorite, O Come, O Come Emmanuel. The words were originally written in Latin in the 12th Century. The author of the words and composer to the music are unknown. It is, however believed that the melody was of French origin and added to the text a hundred years later. The Latin was originally translated into English by John Mason Neale in 1851. This present rendition, however, is a shorter adapted version. I'm not sure who revised the lyrics, but I like this version better than the original.
O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Refrain
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, Thou Wisdom from on high,
And order all things far, and nigh;
To us the path of knowledge show,
And cause us in her ways to go.
Refrain
O come, Desire of nations, bind
All peoples in one heart and mind;
Bid envy, strife, and quarrels cease;
Fill the whole world with heaven's peace.
Refrain
O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Refrain
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, Thou Wisdom from on high,
And order all things far, and nigh;
To us the path of knowledge show,
And cause us in her ways to go.
Refrain
O come, Desire of nations, bind
All peoples in one heart and mind;
Bid envy, strife, and quarrels cease;
Fill the whole world with heaven's peace.
Refrain
