CAN YOU LOSE YOUR SALVATION ?

I HAVE HEARD ALL MY ADULT LIFE, "ONCE SAVED, ALWAYS SAVED", AND I HAVE HEARD A LOT OF MINISTERS AND PEOPLE SAY THAT IT WAS NOT TRUE.  WELL, WHEN I WAS NOT REALLY STUDYING THE BIBLE, MANY YEARS AGO, I REALLY DID NOT KNOW.  I ALWAYS HOPED IT WAS TRUE THAT I WOULD ALWAYS BE SAVED BUT NO ONE COULD TELL ME.

FINALLY I GOT SMART AND WENT TO THE BIBLE AND STARTED STUDYING FOR MYSELF.  GUESS WHAT I FOUND......THE ANSWER, RIGHT IN GOD'S WORD.  READ IT FOR YOURSELF, "ROMANS 8:37Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

I THINK THAT PASSAGE PRETTY MUCH TELLS IT THE WAY IT IS...NOTHING CAN SEPARATE US.  I AM GLAD IT INCLUDED "WHICH IS IN CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD" BECAUSE WE, WHO ARE BORN AGAIN, ARE IN JESUS.  JESUS SAID THIS HIMSELF IN JOHN 14:19Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. 20At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in Me, and I in you.

SO, IF ANYONE EVER ASKS YOU IF YOU CAN LOSE YOUR SALVATION, YOU CAN TELL THEM NO.  THIS SHOULD MAKE A LOT OF YOU FEEL MUCH BETTER.  WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH JESUS LOVES US.  I GUESS THE BEST EXPLANATION IS THAT "HE IS LOVE".  LET'S MAKE IT OUR GOAL THIS WEEK TO GO OUT AND TELL SOMEONE ABOUT HOW MUCH JESUS LOVES THEM.  HOW ELSE WILL THEY KNOW IF WE DON'T TELL THEM.

GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

Hi David,

I agree that we are preserved in the Father's hand. Indeed, nothing can snatch us away from him. However, we are still free to leave, and must choose to remain.

John 15:6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.

We are quite clearly told (in fact warned), that we can fall away. We must hold on to faith, to the very end, or we will not share in Christ.

Hebrews 3:13-14 Take care, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today”, that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we share in Christ, if only we hold to our first confidence firm to the end,...

Paul does not assume his salvation is secure.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 ...I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

The fact is we are saved by grace through faith, but our faith can be shipwrecked (1 Timothy 1:19), departed from (1 Timothy 4:1), disowned (1 Timothy 5:8) wandered from (1 Timothy 6:10), and missed (1 Timothy 6:21).

So, you are absolutely correct in saying we are eternally secure (as Calvin strongly emphasized) - but only as we choose to remain committed to the relationship (as Wesley pointed out).

The distinction may seem subtle, but it can have eternal consequences for someone who becomes complacent, and is coasting along on past victories. They may be drifting away from God, becoming carnal, losing faith, but still feeling confident of their salvation - that's the danger.

Eternal security teachers often say that conditional security is salvation by works. If not in the initial salvation, then works to maintain salvation. However, that is a false allegation.

Salvation is by grace through faith, but that faith can be departed from. Works only come into the picture as the evidence and exercising of faith.

Predestiny and freewill co-exist, in that the plan of salvation was predestined but our participation in it is by choice. There is synergism whereby God initiates and we respond. He pours out his Spirit and we accept, he works in us and we co-operate.

We are warned not to quench the Spirit. He desires to fellowship with us, but we must choose to let him in, and choose to remain in that relationship.

Revelation 3:20 - Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door (choice-synergism), I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.
