Dr Henry Jackson

Henry Jackson is one of today’s leading gospel singers, songwriters, and musicians.  He has traveled nationally and internationally spreading the gospel in song.  Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Henry was raised in the music rich bay area city of San Francisco, California.  Henry was drawn to this vibrant music called “gospel” at a very early age.  He began his formal music training at the age of 8, studying classical piano first with a private teacher, then on to the San Francisco Music and Arts Institute.

Henry began his recording career in the early 1970’s with the Harrison Johnson Los Angeles Community Choir, writing and producing such classic songs as “Help Us Master,” “He Didn’t Have to Do It,” and the toe-tappin’ “I’m So Thankful.”  Henry has written and published over 50 songs all of which have been recorded by others as well as Henry himself, and many of his songs are available in sheet music form.  Also in the 70’s, Henry formed the ensemble known as The Henry Jackson Company.  This group recorded three albums, which received very wide acclaim in the gospel music industry.  Riding the success of those albums, Henry embarked on a solo career and recorded 2 solo albums, working with such celebrated gospel producers as Reverend D. J. Rogers, the late Reverend James Cleveland and Gene Barge.  Henry also recorded and performed live as a member of the famed James Cleveland Singers.

A very prolific songwriter, Henry’s songs have been recorded by such artists as the Grammy nominated, Father Charles Hayes & the Cosmopolitan Church Choir of Chicago, Reverend Milton Brunson & the Thompson Community Singers, The Los Angeles Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, founded by the late, well known Grammy award-winning Reverend James Cleveland, Cassietta George and most recently the Mississippi Mass Choir, and the Brookinaires Gospel Choir.

Henry has also performed with such gospel greats as Albertina Walker & The Caravans, Shirley Caesar, Andre & Sandra Crouch, Edwin & Walter Hawkins, the Legendary Clara Ward Singers, Tramaine Hawkins, Rance Allen Group, Richard Smallwood and many more.  In addition, Henry has graced the stage with secular artists such as Natalie Cole, Patti Labelle, Dionne Warwick and the queen herself, Aretha Franklin.

In June 2011, Henry Jackson was bestowed an honorary Doctor of Music degree by Bible Believers Christian College and Seminary. Dr. Jackson is a member of Ward A.M.E. Church in Los Angeles where he serves as director of the Voices of Praise choir.
