The that time have to be cut short or else no flesh would be saved.
[8] For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: [9] Not of works, lest any man should boast. [10] For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
So it's telling us we're not saved by works. But we are his workmanship. God created us on to Good works. And God has ordained that we should walk in them. Should walk in them. If you love me keep my Commandments. He is righteous and holy. And Christ did say that when he comes he will reward every man according to his works. The workman is worthy of his pay.

The engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
Is salvation by works? The half brother of Jesus made controversial statements about faith without works being dead. He told the story about Abraham being justified by his work offering Isaac his son. And it was counted to him as righteousness. Now Apostle Paul came later. And also James kept the law and was accustomed to that so he would be referencing to that. But Apostle Paul was dealing with stubborn Jewish people under law. So I believe Grace was extended as well as the law was lifted because it was impossible for non jews (gentiles) to keep it. But at the same time we're not to take Grace for granted and fall from grace. We are under Paul's gospel.
He was an advocate of keeping the law. That's why this is here. Modern Christians are not under the law. At the same time your works are important but what is more important is your heart right with God?
"Later tradition records that James was called “the Just” and was noted for his fulfillment of Jewish law. Though opposing those Jewish Christians who required that Gentile Christians submit to Jewish Law, including circumcision, he believed Jewish Christians should continue loyalty to Jewish practice and piety, as he did himself. His piety and zeal for the Law had become a basis for various legends; thus, later traditions emphasize James’s piety and popularity with Jews and Jewish Christians. This popularity is evident in the Jews’ anger when priestly authorities had James put to death, reputedly either by stoning (after Flavius Josephus, historian of the Jews) or by being thrown from a Temple tower (after the early Christian writer St. Hegesippus). The early church designates him the first bishop of Jerusalem, though the title is not used in the New Testament. The tradition that he was the author of The Letter of James, a New Testament book of moral instructions, is not supported by modern scholarship."
Faith
In my after notes if you are obeying the Vine then you care how about living a righteous life because the thief on the cross was fortunate enough to be at the time of Christ when we weren't. Even when he/Christ spoke to the people in The Sermon on the Mount he said prophets would have wanted to see what you're seeing and they did not yet they believe. It is written don't put God to the test. You could fall from grace. You could have abused Grace and there are fruits of your conversion. When your sins have been washed away by the blood of Christ you are whiter than snow. But do you really love Christ? You see even Christ said those who listen to him are his. So if Christ is righteous and holy and you are a member of the body what are you? If you are born again then there are fruits of your conversion so don't take chances. Now remember Christ gave us tips about judgement day. Workers of iniquity are Lawless. Christians are known for being hypocrites. Not to say that deceived people aren't because they are too in other ways. But remember it's still a Straight Gate. Don't push it.
Now remember you had people on the day of judgement that were surprised because he found their work righteous and probably holy. Really how? He said when they visited people in prison they did it on to him and they were puzzled. But at the same time you had the other people so happy and eager to present their works and that they cast out demons. So it's almost like you had humble people and then you have hypocrites. People that weren't true Christians, even some real Christians and probably false teachers included. Remember it's a Straight Gate regardless.
I just thought I need to add remember Apostle Paul even when he was in prison being persecuted I believe he wrote letters to certain groups because they were falling away and committing sins and they weren't walking in true righteousness and love. What's the point of being concerned if it doesn't matter? Even Apostle Paul who used to be a persecutor which means a murderer of Christians became righteous and he showed true love. Sometimes he was a bit arrogant with Apostle Peter but he had a big burden on his shoulders which he carried a huge load. Think about it that the others had 12 Apostles plus Christ in their midst but Paul was alone and at times he had Timothy (maybe a couple of others too) but the burden was mainly on his shoulder. And remember even Christ was so upset at the Pharisees because they laid heavy burdens on men's shoulders but they themselves did not lift a finger and he called them whitewashed tombs.
