First there was a controversy with a song whom the writer is now deceased. That song was called Hallelujah and it's a very beautiful song and there's negative reviews about that. But Hallelujah is mentioned in scripture. And perhaps in that song in my assessment a while back of it I could have been more than a tad right but also a shade wrong as I realized and it was put on my heart to judge the songwriter's heart is not easy particularly with Hallelujah. Found in Revelation 19.1, 19.3 , 19.4,

"Some time ago I found the hillsong music by accident and i thought WOW!. Then, as I do with every thing to do with my faith, I read up on it. It seems that there are a great deal of issues regarding the people within this church. There seems to be greed, sexual imorality etc etc. In fact many of the things that fame and wealth brings to human beings. Nothing new to learn here."
"In 2022, Houston stepped down as global senior pastor after an internal investigation found that Houston had breached the church's moral code of conduct for pastors by engaging in inappropriate behaviour with women on two occasions in the 2010s."
Why you shouldn't listen to Hillsong?
The biggest reason you should stop singing songs from Hillsong, Bethel, Jesus Culture, and Elevation is that their music embodies a false theology of worship. "Wow! The religious Pharisee spirit is at it again! What really matters in our worship & life before God; is it living in HIS nature instead of the devil’s. Out hearts are evil & wicked & who can know it, certainly not ourselves. A man of God is needed who has discernment of spirits to check our inner motives for what we say & what we do. Praise God that I have one! What matters is not what we think but what God thinks about this issue. God’s thoughts & ways are not our ways! Does a song led us to repentance to greater devotion & praise for God to lead us to a selfless life for others. That is probably more important to God than actual words used. The Word of God discerns the motives of our heart. Some who are criticizing this song leader, may need to check the huge log in their own eye. How are we all doing in that area? May God be blessed by all that we say & do!"
As written in the Bible man will give an account for Every Idle Word. So even if a word is sung and it is swearing and derogatory it's still an Idle Word.
Matthew 12:36 King James Version
36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment
How do we test the spirits to see if they're from God.
1 John 4:1 King James Version
4 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world
1 Corinthiaworld21l
“Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.”
King James Version (KJV)
....
To be friend the world is enmity with God. James 4:4. We are instructed to obey the gospel of God and we are warned about fornication whether it be physical or spiritual.
I could see where the controversy may be. Perhaps look at what songs are biblical. I have looked over some of the lyrics. I'm not condemning but for myself I would rather stick to traditional gospel. Try to stay within that framework. But I do agree that we are accountable even for the words we sing. Hopefully a song about the Lord doesn't have swearing and profanity in it. I'm reminded again even about this John 10:10. He came to give us an abundance of life.
