TITHING, IT IS UP TO YOU
PEOPLE KEEP ASKING ME IF CHRISTIANS HAVE TO TITHE. LET'S LOOK AT WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT IT. THE WORD "TITHE" APPEARED 12 TIMES IN THE OLD TESTAMENT AND THOSE WERE DIRECTED TO THE JEWS THAT WERE UNDER THE LAW. IT ONLY APPEARS TWICE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT WHERE JESUS IS CHASTISING THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES. LET'S LOOK AT WHAT HE SAID. ( MATTHEW 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.) LUKE 11:42 SAYS ABOUT THE SAME THING.
NOW TO ANSWER THE QUESTION, TECHNICALLY NO. WE CHRISTIANS DO NOT HAVE TO TITHE. IT WAS AN OLD TESTAMENT LAW AND WE HAVE BEEN REDEEMED FROM THE CURSE OF THE LAW. (GALATIANS 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.)
NOW LET'S ASK THE QUESTION, "DO CHRISTIANS NEED TO TITHE"? IT IS UP TO THE INDIVIDUAL AS TO HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT IT. THE CHURCHES DO NEED MONEY TO FUNCTION AND IF WE ARE GETTING SOMETHING OUT OF GOING TO CHURCH, WHY NOT SUPPORT THEM. LET'S SEE WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT GIVING. I GUESS THE BEST VERSE TO LOOK AT IS 2ND CORINTHIANS 9:7 WHERE IT SAYS "Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver." FROM THIS, IT LOOKS LIKE IT IS AN ISSUE OF THE HEART. IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO IT GRUDGINGLY, IT IS BETTER NOT TO GIVE. IT IS ALL UP TO YOU.
PEOPLE ASK WHY DOES EVERYONE SAY WE HAVE TO GIVE TEN PERCENT? THE TEN PERCENT WAS GOD'S IDEA IN THE OLD TESTAMENT AND SOME USE IT AS A GUIDE TODAY FOR GIVING TO THE CHURCH.
SO, IF YOU WANT TO GIVE, GIVE. HOWEVER, AS FOR OBEYING THE LAW OF TITHING IN THE OLD TESTAMENT, THAT LAW WAS, AND IS, NOT FOR US CHRISTIANS. NOW THAT I HAVE SAID ALL OF THIS, I WOULD LIKE TO LEAVE YOU WITH THE WORDS OF LUKE AS STATED IN ACTS 20:35 WHERE HE SAID "I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive." AND THE LAST VERSE IS WHAT JESUS TELLS US IN LUKE 6:38 WHERE HE SAYS "Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again."
I JUST HAVE ONE LAST THING TO SAY ABOUT THIS. IF YOU ARE GOING TO TITHE OR GIVE, WHATEVER YOU CALL IT, DO IT OUT OF LOVE AND NOT TO RECEIVE A GAIN ON WHAT YOU HAVE GIVEN. IT IS UP TO ALL OF US AS TO WHAT WE WILL DO.
