"HOW DO YOU HANDLE TEMPTATION?" BY DAVID MCMILLEN
HOW ARE WE TEMPTED? IS IT SOMETHING WE SEE OR HEAR? WHEN THAT TEMPTATION COMES, WHAT DO YOU DO? IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, THAT IS YOUR FIRST PROBLEM. TEMPTATION STARTS IN THE MIND. IF YOU DWELL ON IT, IT WILL GROW AND SOMETIMES YOU WILL ACT ON IT. EVEN IF YOU DON'T PHYSICALLY ACT ON IT, JESUS SAYS IN MATTHEW 5:28 "That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." ALTHOUGH THIS SCRIPTURE IS ABOUT LUST, IT WOULD BE THE SAME FOR HATE, ENVY, ETC.
THE DEVIL WILL PUT EVERY TYPE OF TEMPTATION IN FRONT OF YOU AND IT IS UP TO YOU TO REJECT IT. IF THE THOUGHT ENTERS YOUR MIND, GET RID OF IT AND DON'T DWELL ON IT. DO WHAT IT SAYS IN 2ND CORINTHIANS 10:5 "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." IT IS LIKE SOMETHING YOU PUT IN YOUR MOUTH. IF IT IS NO GOOD YOU SPIT IT OUT. TEMPTATION IS THE SAME WAY AND YOU MUST NOT TAKE IT ALL THE WAY IN. THE DEVIL WILL ALSO LIE TO YOU AND MAKE YOU THINK IT IS OK. IN JOHN 8:44, JESUS IS TALKING TO THE PHARISEES AND SAYS "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it." THIS PRETTY MUCH TELLS YOU WHAT SATAN IS.
ONE OTHER THING YOU MUST UNDERSTAND IS THAT THE DEVIL IS THE TEMPTER. I HAVE HEARD PEOPLE SAY THAT GOD TEMPTED THEM TO SEE WHAT THEY WOULD DO. THAT IS SO WRONG. WHEN JESUS WAS BEING TEMPTED IN THE WILDERNESS, IT SAYS IN MATTHEW 4:3 "And when the tempter came to him". SATAN IS THE TEMPTER, NOT GOD. IN FACT IT SAYS THIS IN JAMES 1:13-14 "Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed." WE KNOW IT IS SATAN WHO ENTICES US. YOU NEVER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT JESUS TEMPTING YOU.
THE THING I WOULD LIKE TO LEAVE YOU WITH IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SAYINGS AND THAT IS, "YOU CAN'T BE TEMPTED BY SOMETHING YOU DON'T THINK ABOUT". JUST THINK ABOUT THAT. WHEN THOSE EVIL THOUGHT COMES, AND THEY WILL, QUOTE A BIBLE VERSE. IT IS HARD TO THINK ABOUT EVIL THINGS WHEN YOU ARE QUOTING THE BIBLE. IT WORKS FOR ME AND I KNOW IT WILL FOR YOU.
