"JESUS IS OUR PROPITIATION" BY DAVID MCMILLEN
DO YOU KNOW WHAT PROPITIOUS MEANS? IT MEANS "Disposed to be gracious or merciful; ready to forgive sins and bestow blessings." THIS IS WHAT GOD'S PURPOSE WAS WHEN HE SENT JESUS. JESUS WAS THE PROPITIATION (the atonement or atoning sacrifice offered to God to assuage his wrath and render him propitious to sinners). KNOWING THIS MAKES IT A LITTLE EASIER TO UNDERSTAND WHAT JOHN IS TELLING US IN 1ST JOHN 2:1-2 WHEN HE SAYS "My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world." DON'T FORGET HE IS TALKING TO BELIEVERS WHEN HE SAYS "FOR OUR SINS". THEN HE GOES ON TO INCLUDE EVERYONE WHEN HE SAYS "FOR THE WHOLE WORLD". WHEN JESUS SAID "IT IS FINISHED", HE REALLY MEANT IT. ALL SIN HAS BEEN FORGIVEN. 1ST JOHN 4:10 GOES ON TO SAY "Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins." THIS HAS TO BE THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL, AND WHY NOT, GOD IS LOVE.
JESUS' GREAT SACRIFICE WAS THE ONLY WAY TO BRING PEACE BETWEEN GOD AND MAN. GOD COULD NOT LOOK ON SINFUL MAN BUT BECAUSE OF JESUS, GOD NOW SEES US AS JESUS IS, SINLESS. A LOT OF PEOPLE MISUNDERSTAND WHAT LUKE 2:13-14 IS SAYING WHEN IT SAYS "And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." IT IS NOT SAYING PEACE ON EARTH BETWEEN MEN. LOOK WHAT JESUS SAID IN MATTHEW 10:34 "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword." BECAUSE OF JESUS, WE DON'T HAVE TO HAVE A GO BETWEEN. LET'S DO WHAT PAUL TELLS US TO DO IN HEBREW 4:16 WHEN HE SAYS "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." WHAT A GREAT VERSE. NOW WE CAN GO DIRECTLY TO GOD. JUST REMEMBER, GOD IS WAITING TO TALK WITH YOU.
