THE LAW, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
I WAS READING 1ST JOHN 2:2-3 AGAIN THIS MORNING AND WONDERED IF ANYONE HAD A PROBLEMS UNDERSTANDING THESE TWO VERSES. THE VERSES READS AS FOLLOWS, "Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who say, "I know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him". I HAD TO REMIND MYSELF THAT JOHN WAS TALKING TO THE JEWS WHO WERE UNDER THE LAW OF MOSES. THERE WERE HUNDREDS OF LAWS THAT PERTAINED TO JUST ABOUT EVERY ASPECT OF THE JEWISH LIFE INCLUDING THE TEN COMMANDMENTS WHICH IS CALLED THE LAW.
SINCE JESUS WENT TO THE CROSS FOR US, WE HAVE BEEN REDEEMED FROM THE CURSE OF THE LAW. LOOK AT GALATIANS 3:13 WHERE IT SAYS "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree." WE, AS CHRISTIANS, ARE UNDER GRACE, NOT THE LAW, FOR IT SAYS IN EPHESIANS 2:5 THAT "Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved.)"
NOW DON'T GET ME WRONG, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS ARE GOOD AND WE SHOULD TRY TO OBEY THEM BUT THEY WERE GIVEN TO SHOW MANKIND THAT THEY NEEDED A SAVIOR. PAUL PUTS IT THIS WAY IN ROMANS 7:7 WHERE HE SAYS "What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet." HE ALSO SAID IN ROMANS 5:13 For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
JUST REMEMBER THIS, WE ALL SHOULD LIVE AS HOLY AS WE CAN BUT NONE OF US CAN COME CLOSE TO LIVING A SINLESS LIFE. THAT IS WHY WE NEEDED JESUS. JOHN 1:17 PUTS IT THIS WAY "For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ." LIKE I SAID, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS ARE GOOD BUT KEEPING THEM WILL NOT GET YOU SAVED. THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY TO THE FATHER AND THAT IS THROUGH JESUS.
