DO YOU KNOW WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC YOUR CHILDREN ARE LISTENING TO? WHAT TYPE ARE YOU LISTENING TO? WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE MUSIC YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN ARE LISTENING TO? WHAT ARE THE CONTENT OF THE LYRICS?
I AM SURE SOME OF YOU ARE THINKING THAT I AM GETTING "PICKY" ABOUT THINGS THAT DO NOT REALLY MATTER. HOWEVER, I BELIEVE IT DOES MATTER WHAT KIND OF MUSIC WE LISTEN TO. I HAVE HEARD PEOPLE SAY THAT THEY WOULD NEVER LISTEN TO RAP MUSIC AND THAT IT IS ALL BAD. I CHALLENGE THEM TO LISTEN TO A CHRISTIAN RAPPER WHO IS UPLIFTING JESUS AND GIVING HIM PRAISE AND WORSHIP. HOW CAN THIS BE WRONG. THERE ARE SOME SECULAR SONGS THAT MAKE YOU DEPRESSED AND CRY WHILE THERE ARE OTHERS THAT LIFT YOU UP AND MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD. IT IS THE WORDS THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE. I BELIEVE WE SHOULD STICK TO THE ONES WITH A POSITIVE MESSAGE.
LET'S LOOK AT MUSIC IN THE BIBLE. KING DAVID USED MUSIC FOR THE PURPOSE OF WORSHIPING GOD. JUST LOOK AT SOME OF THE PSALMS. HOWEVER, WHEN KING SAUL WAS TROUBLED BY EVIL SPIRITS, DAVID WOULD PLAY HIS HARP TO SOOTHE HIM. (1ST SAMUEL 16:23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.) I WAS HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THIS SCRIPTURE BECAUSE IT SAID "THE EVIL SPIRIT FROM GOD" UNTIL I READ A COMMENTARY FROM ANDREW WOMMACK WHICH READS "This wasn’t an evil spirit in the sense that it was demonic. This was a godly spirit from the Lord. The word “evil” doesn’t only mean “1. Morally bad or wrong; wicked”; it also means “2. Causing ruin, injury, or pain; harmful.” This godly angel was judgment and punishment on Saul for his wickedness."
IT SAYS IN JUDGES 7:16-18 THAT GIDEON USED MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS TO SURPRISE HIS ENEMIES. (And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers. And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do. When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.)
IN NEHEMIAH 4:20 IT SAYS THE ISRAELITES USED MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS TO WARN OF DANGER. (In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.) I LIKE THE SCRIPTURE EPHESIANS 5:19-21 WHERE WE ARE TO ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER WITH MUSIC, (Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.)
THE BIBLE DEFINITELY ALLOWS US TO LISTEN TO MUSIC BUT WE JUST HAVE TO KNOW WHAT TO LISTEN TO. I FIND GREAT PLEASURE IN LISTENING TO MUSIC THAT WORSHIPS THE LORD WHILE I GET NO PLEASURE AT ALL IN MUSIC THAT HAS A NEGATIVE THEME. YOU ARE JUST GOING TO HAVE TO DECIDE WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO LISTEN TO. JUST REMEMBER, JESUS CAN ALSO HEAR IT.
