WE MUST CONTROL OUR TONGUE
I WAS DOING A STUDY ON THE BOOK OF JAMES, SPECIFICALLY ON THE "TONGUE". THE WHOLE BIBLE HAS A LOT TO SAY ABOUT THE TONGUE. PSALM 34:13 SAYS "Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile." THAT OLD SAYING "STICKS AND STONES MAY BREAK MY BONES BUT WORDS CAN NEVER HURT ME" IS A LIE OF THE DEVIL. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SAID SOMETHING TO SOMEONE AND AS SOON AS THE WORDS WERE OUT OF YOUR MOUTH YOU REGRETTED IT? HOW MANY TIMES HAS SOMEONE SAID SOMETHING TO YOU OR ABOUT YOU THAT REALLY HURT? THE TONGUE IS A POWERFUL THING. IT CAN BE POWERFUL FOR GOOD AND AGAINST EVIL. TO SHOW YOU HOW POWERFUL THE TONGUE IS, I AM GOING TO COPY BELOW THE FIRST 12 VERSES OF JAMES 3. PLEASE READ AND REALLY THINK ON WHAT IT IS SAYING.
1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
3 Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
I KNOW IT IS NOT EASY TO CONTROL YOUR TONGUE BECAUSE THAT OLD CARNAL SELF POPS UP NOW AND AGAIN AND CATCHES US OFF GUARD. WE HAVE TO FIND A WAY OF CONTROLLING THIS. ROMANS 12:1-2 TELLS US HOW TO DO THIS AND I WILL QUOTE IT HERE "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." WE ALL HAVE TO RENEW OUR MINDS AND CONTROL OUR OLD CARNAL SELF. ALTHOUGH WE ARE IN THIS WORLD, JESUS SAYS IN A PRAYER TO GOD THAT WE ARE NOT OF THIS WORLD. (JOHN 17:14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.) WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE NOT OF THIS WORLD.
ONE LAST THOUGHT THAT MIGHT GIVE YOU AN INCENTIVE TO WATCH WHAT WE SAY IS IN MATTHEW 12:35-36 WHICH SAYS "A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned." WE HAVE TO WATCH OUR TONGUES AND START THINKING BEFORE WE SPEAK. IT HURTS SO MUCH WHEN WE DO THIS, NOT ONLY TO THE ONE WE DID IT TO BUT TO OURSELVES AS WELL. I WILL BE PRAYING FOR ALL OF YOU ON THIS AND PLEASE PRAY FOR ME ALSO. I LOVE YOU ALL.
