Fasting Drives Away Doubt

Mark 9:29 'And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.'

Prayer and fasting do not drive certain demons out. If the name of Jesus and faith in His name won't do the job, then fasting and prayer won't either. Jesus is saying that fasting and prayer are the only ways of casting out this type of unbelief.
An unbelief that comes as a result of ignorance can be done away with by receiving the truth of God's Word (Rom. 10:17; 2 Pet. 1:4). We are not from the world. Through the new birth, we come from God and should constantly remind ourselves of this. It is not good to be too 'at home' in the world. We are in the world but are not of the world. Great men and women of God have always had this attitude.
The primary reason that God chooses to use those who are nothing by the world's standards, is so no one else can take credit for the great things that are accomplished.

In this prayer, Jesus prayed twice that the Father would keep His disciples from evil. Then He reveals the way that God will accomplish this - through His Word, the holy scriptures. Anyone who desires to live for God, reject the devil, and reject the world's system, must know God's Word.
We must study the scriptures, for they reveal the will of God for our actions and attitudes. To be filled with the knowledge of God's will, we must be filled with God's Word. God's Word is His will! Those who are ignorant of God's Word will be ignorant of God's will.

DO YOU REMEMBER THE STORY ABOUT JESUS SPITTING ON THE GROUND AND MAKING MUD OUT OF IT AND PUTTING IT ON A BLIND MAN EYES? HE TOLD HIM TO GO WASH IT OFF IN THE POOL OF SILOAM, WHICH HE DID, AND CAME BACK SEEING. THE PHARISEES DID NOT BELIEVE THE MAN HAD BEEN BORN BLIND SO THEY CALLED HIS PARENTS AND ASK THEM. THEY TOLD THEM THAT HE WAS THEIR SON AND WAS BORN BLIND BUT DID NOT KNOW HOW HE RECEIVED HIS SIGHT AND SAID HE IS OF AGE, ASK HIM. THEY WERE AFRAID BECAUSE ANYONE WHO BELIEVED THAT JESUS WAS CHRIST WOULD BE PUT OUT OF THE SYNAGOGUE.

Jesus was not implying that Peter and Satan were one-and-the-same, but was referring to the fact that Satan had inspired Peter's statement. Self-denial is an important part of the Christian life. Jesus sacrificed His life for us and He demands that we die to ourselves that we might experience the new life He has provided. We do this first by recognizing that we can't save ourselves by our own effort and, second, by trusting God - not self - for salvation. Then daily, we need to deny our own wisdom and seek God's wisdom and direction for our lives.
Self-denial is only good when we are denying ourselves for the singular purpose...
