looking up to the sky heart burning with love
thinking about what Jesus did for me
then the cares of the world that tried to drown me
disappear and birds join in a chorus of praise

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
the emblem of suffering and shame;
and I love that old cross where the dearest and best
for a world of lost sinners was slain.

So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
and exchange it some day for a crown.

 O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
has a wondrous attraction for me;
for the dear Lamb of God left his glory above
to bear it to dark Calvary

I remember that cross that Jesus endured
and how it led to grave for our king
The grave He rose from in glorious power
and the promise to us for the same

Then to heaven He went, advocating for us
every night and each livelong day
longing for the day, that is coming so soon
when He returns to forever set us free
