faith bible study

By James J Dougherty, 2013-04-27

                                                Faith a bible study

Here is a bible study on Faith, and what it is, and how it applies during the bible in stories and  in teachings. To define faith and give many good examples of it, I turn first to the faith chapter of the bible, namely Hebrews chapter 11:

(Hebrews 11:1)  Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

(Hebrews 11:2)  For by it the people of old received their commendation.

(Hebrews 11:3)  By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

(Hebrews 11:4)  By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks.

God's visits bible study

By James J Dougherty, 2013-04-28

God’s visits and awesome presence a study

This is a study of the various times that God visited the earth after the creation and the fall. He was on the earth pretty much all the time until man fell by succumbing to temptation, to eat the fruit which God told them that they were not allowed to eat (the only tree of many) placed before him by the serpent, who was most likely Satan in disguise. He did speak to Noah, and all just before the flood.

My first example visit is the situation with the confusing of the languages, with the tower of Babel in Genesis:

(Genesis 11:1)  Now the whole earth had one language and the same words.

(Genesis 11:2)  And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.

(Genesis 11:3)  And they said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly." And they had brick for...

Angel visitation

By James J Dougherty, 2013-04-29

                        Angel visitation a bible study

God loved the world He often sent His angels with various purposes in mind, usually helpful though there also were on occasion death angels to bring His judgment. This bible study will include explore some of these various purposes, such as provision, rescue, and communication. In several of these stories they also were directly or perhaps indirectly responsible for miracles that happened while they interacted with the people. The first of these appearances here is where an angel appeared to Hagar concerning her pregnancy with Ishmael in Genesis 16, after she fled from Sarah:

(Genesis 16:6)  But Abram said to Sarai, "Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please." Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her.

(Genesis 16:7)  The angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring...

God commissioning bible study

By James J Dougherty, 2013-04-30

                                    God commissioning bible study

There are many notable passages where God speaks and commissions a patriarch, prophet or even apostle in various and different ways. In the New Testament it is mainly Jesus doing this commissioning. The very first commissioning was for the very creatures and man in Genesis 1 just after God had created all of them, to be fruitful and multiply:

(Genesis 1:20)  And God said, "Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens."

(Genesis 1:21)  So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

(Genesis 1:22)  And God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply...

God's messages bible study

By James J Dougherty, 2013-05-01

God’s messages bible study

This is a study of messages that God has given various people, including the patriarchs, the prophets and other people as well. In many ways the entire bible is God’s love message to us on how to live, and how not to live, however I am selecting some that really stand out for power and or content.

The first message is the one where God told Abraham to go to a land that He would show him, and Abraham went by faith:

(Genesis 12:1)  Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you.

(Genesis 12:2)  And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.

(Genesis 12:3)  I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."

(Genesis 12:4)  So Abram...

worship bible study

By James J Dougherty, 2013-05-02

                                                Worship song bible study

Here are some excellent worship and praise passages to God in the scriptures, many of which are not Psalms, which of course are the best of the bunch of them. The first one I am using in this study is the one in Exodus 15, where the children of Israel are celebrating after they were delivered from Egypt across the suddenly dry Red Sea, and also the Pharaoh and his army’s sudden destruction when the Red Sea came back to its place after God moved it out of the way to enable the Israelites to cross on dry land in the middle of the sea:

(Exodus 15:1)  Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the LORD, saying, "I will sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.

(Exodus 15:2)  The LORD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him, my father's God, and I...

blessings and promises bible study

By James J Dougherty, 2013-05-03

Blessings and promises a bible study

I red an excellent teaching piece on promises of God on Indie Gospel Artist’s blogs yesterday and felt the Holy Spirit tell me to do a bible study on a very similar topic. God does love us and He does indeed want to bless us for obeying. The first scripture to be used is from Deuteronomy 28 listing the various blessings for obedience:

(Deuteronomy 28:1)  "And if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.

(Deuteronomy 28:2)  And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the LORD your God.

(Deuteronomy 28:3)  Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field.

(Deuteronomy 28:4)  Blessed shall be the fruit of...

prayer and intercession bible study

By James J Dougherty, 2013-05-04

Prayer and intercession a bible study

Many times in the bible, in both the Old and New testaments, people do intercede one for one another, as well as for their own personal situations. I am going to highlight some of these prayers in this study. These prayers is done for varying reasons, often depending on what situation people find themselves in, and also the prayers have varying results too. This is a sampling of the prayers, I am aware of there being others around, but I have felt led to include these. The first prayer covered is a face to face intercession by Abraham, for the Lord and His angels visited Abraham, for the inhabitants of Sodom.

(Genesis 18:17)  The LORD said, "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do,

(Genesis 18:18)  seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

(Genesis...
